Strategy 1: Scanning

Scanning is the foundation of every Sudoku solve. You look at each row, column, and box to find cells where only one digit can fit. This sounds obvious, but it is the technique that solves the majority of easy and medium puzzles.

Cross-Hatching

Pick a digit, say 5. Look at which rows and columns already contain a 5. The remaining rows and columns define a set of boxes where the 5 could still go. If only one box in that set has an empty cell that is not blocked by a 5 in its row or column, that is where the 5 goes.

Counting

For each empty cell, count which digits are already present in its row, column, and box. If only one digit is missing from all three constraints, that digit goes in the cell. This is the most direct form of deduction and should be your first move every time you sit down with a puzzle.

Strategy 2: Pencil Marking

When scanning alone is not enough, pencil marking changes the game. You write small candidate digits in each empty cell, listing every digit that could possibly go there based on the current constraints.

Pencil marking turns a vague sense of "this might be a 7" into a concrete set of possibilities. Once every cell has its candidates, you can apply systematic elimination techniques that are impossible to do mentally.

How to Mark Efficiently

Do not write full numbers. Use dots or small marks in the corners of each cell. A dot in the top-left corner means 1, top-right means 2, bottom-left means 3, and so on. This system is faster to write and easier to scan than full digits.

Strategy 3: Naked Singles and Hidden Singles

These are the two most important intermediate techniques. A naked single is a cell with only one candidate left. A hidden single is a digit that appears as a candidate in only one cell within a row, column, or box, even though that cell has other candidates too.

Hidden singles are easy to miss when you are scanning candidates visually. The trick is to scan one digit at a time across each unit rather than scanning cells. Ask yourself: where can the 7 go in this box? If only one cell remains, that is your hidden single.

Strategy 4: Naked Pairs and Triples

When two cells in the same row, column, or box contain exactly the same two candidates, those two digits must occupy those two cells. No other cell in that unit can contain either digit. This is a naked pair. The same logic extends to naked triples, where three cells contain only three candidates among them.

Naked pairs are powerful because they eliminate candidates from other cells, often revealing hidden singles in the process. They are the gateway to more advanced techniques.

Strategy 5: Pointing Pairs and Box-Line Reduction

A pointing pair occurs when all candidates for a digit within a box lie in a single row or column. Since that digit must go in one of those cells, you can eliminate it from the rest of that row or column outside the box.

Box-line reduction is the reverse: if all candidates for a digit in a row or column lie within a single box, you can eliminate that digit from the rest of the box. Both techniques bridge the gap between box and line constraints and are essential for medium-difficulty puzzles.

Strategy 6: Advanced Patterns

For hard and expert puzzles, the techniques above are not enough. Advanced patterns like X-Wing, Swordfish, and XY-Wing look for candidate arrangements across multiple rows and columns that create forced eliminations.

X-Wing

An X-Wing occurs when a digit appears as a candidate in exactly two cells in each of two rows, and those cells are in the same two columns. The digit must go in one of the two cells in each row, which means it cannot appear in any other cell in those two columns. This eliminates the digit from all other cells in those columns.

X-Wing is rare enough that most puzzles do not require it, but when it appears, it is often the key that unlocks the entire solution. The pattern is easy to spot once you know what to look for: two rows, two columns, four cells forming a rectangle.

A Solving Routine

Do not jump straight into advanced techniques. Follow a consistent routine that builds on each step.

  1. Scan for naked singles using counting.
  2. Pencil-mark all remaining empty cells.
  3. Scan for hidden singles, one digit at a time.
  4. Look for naked pairs and triples.
  5. Apply pointing pairs and box-line reduction.
  6. Repeat steps 1 through 5 until no more progress is possible.
  7. Try advanced patterns if the puzzle is still unsolved.

Most puzzles of moderate difficulty are solved by steps 1 through 5. Advanced patterns are reserved for the hardest challenges.
